What if I told you there was a town that caught fire in 1962 and has been burning ever since. The town of Centralia, Pennsylvania in 1962 was a small but growing coal mining town. At its height it had over 2500 people in the town and surrounding area. In 1962 the town was burning its landfill to reduce the volume and in doing so an exposed vein of coal caught fire.

The fire spread underground and continued to burn for 2 decades before the full scale of the problem was understood. In 1981 a 12 year old boy was outside when a sink hole opened up underneath him. If it weren’t for his cousin’s help he would have fallen 150′ to an underground inferno. By this time the fire had spread to affect 200 acres of land recent studies show that it could burn as long as 250 years.

I saw this and thought the idea was really cool. The concept behind “Steam Punk” or Steam Works is what if technology had developed differently. For example, what would machines have been like if computers and the industrial revolution occurred at roughly the same time. Leave aside the obvious problems with that concept and enjoy the designs for their ingenuity. They strike me as something for a H. G Wells or Jules Verne novel. They are fascinating to watch and intriguing to consider the possibilities.

With the cost of movie tickets reaching close to $10 per person and the concessions costing close to the GDP of many small countries it can be daunting to budget fun time with the family if you budget is tight. Too many times we equate fun with $$$ and forget that there are a ton of simple ways we can enjoy time together with out vegging out in front of the the TV or movie screen. John reminded me of a video I saw a long time ago of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs on stage together doing a funny sketch back in 1983. The clip was recently played during D5 when they were once again on stage for a more serious discussion. In it, Jobs plays host of the Mac Dating game and has 3 developers (including Gates) talking about why they are the best choice for the Mac platform. They all exude that powerful 1983 fashion style that I am sure will hit the Paris fashion shows next year.

Ever wonder what one has do to be called great? Consider Alexander the Great. There have been several people that have ruled great portions of land through out history. What is it he did that causes us to identify him by this one key characteristic?

Life has been very busy since that first post in Feb. I finally have things situated where I can offer a consistent focus on keeping content to the blog going. I first want to thank John for his help in making this happen. Over the past several months I have been going through a lot of changes recently including the purchase of a new home and all the excitement and frustrations that go along with moving. Over the next few weeks I plan on detailing my experiences with the moving process, companies I dealt with during the process, and items I purchased. Between posts and reviews I will post some opinion articles because I am of course a very non-opinionated and don’t care to express my views on subjects.
